Are you thinking to yourself, ‘what role does an oral language curriculum designed for young students to acquire English have to do with structural analysis?’. The answer is ‘everything’! Let’s jump right in and start with defining structural analysis. To put it simply, structural analysis is the ability to break unfamiliar words down into smaller parts. In other words, once students achieve sound-symbol correspondence and can apply this knowledge to decode one syllable words, they can then begin to focus on those meaningful word parts that will help them to develop skills to read and understand more complex, multisyllabic words. That, of course, is why structural analysis is at the heart of Science of Reading. Structural analysis relies on using multiple elements to develop a student's capacity to comprehend unfamiliar words. Your students may have the ability to decode words, but without a firm foundation in oral language and of word meaning, their comprehension in English will be negatively impacted.
Put simply, language comprehension depends heavily on knowledge of word meaning, and knowledge of a word is gained over time after multiple exposures both in speech and in print.
For a perfect example of the power of word knowledge, let’s look in the glove compartment of our cars. Speaking from experience, just because that car manual is in there and explains most of the workings of my car, I still find my car is in better hands with a mechanic, or someone who has a true grasp on and experience with the vocabulary and language being used. When I try to determine why a warning light is flashing on my dashboard, I don’t understand what that little book is telling me to do about it. Yes, I can decode the words, but I don’t have knowledge of the word meanings; therefore, I can't make sense out of it.
With GrapeSEED’s curriculum, your students receive multiple exposures to new words, and in context that’s meaningful & fun...coming in the form of songs, poems, stories, action activities, and more. As you lead your children in their interactive daily lessons, they will learn new words and how to use them correctly.
Our natural language acquisition process ensures that young students will learn to recognize English speech and to process, speak, and overtime read and write without first interpreting from their heritage languages.
